Sheridan Media Fundamentals Program offers foundation curriculum in film, broadcasting, journalism and digital media. By taking this suite of media courses, you’ll learn about your interests and abilities while charting a course for more advanced media studies.
You’ll acquire basic skills and concepts in:
- Web and computer technology
- Sound
- Camera
- Television and film production
- Media history
- Communications theory
- Visual design
At the same time, you’ll refine academic skills such as research, writing, and preparing and delivering presentations, which will serve you no matter which area of media studies you choose to pursue.
Gain a Broad Foundation
You’ll work with many of the same professional faculty who teach in Sheridan’s more advanced media studies programs, with access to state-of-the-art computers and software, digital still cameras, video cameras and sound recording equipment. In the second term you’ll collaborate with classmates on a short film or television production, gaining valuable experience — and helping you decide where you’d like to specialize. You’ll exit the program with a broad, foundational skill set that will prepare you for advanced educational opportunities in a variety of creative fields.
Media Fundamentals classes are held at Sheridan Trafalgar Road Campus, Oakville, Ontario.
A Media Fundamentals certificate is a big first step on the journey toward a media career. After completing the program, you’ll be ready to thrive in whatever media studies discipline you choose to specialize in. You’ll be qualified to compete for entry into Sheridan programs such as:
- Media Arts
- Journalism – Broadcast
- Journalism – Print
- Visual Merchandising Arts
- Advertising
PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY
Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including these required courses:
- One English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U)
or
Mature student status. (See "Admissions" section for details.)
APPLICANT SELECTION
Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses).
Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program will be assessed and advised individually and may be considered for other, related programs.
