Like all of Sheridan's visual arts programs, the Art Fundamentals Program is highly regarded for its rigorous, hands-on training. This one-year program introduces art fundamentals theory and practice to beginning students who want to assess their talent, build a basic portfolio, and chart a course for further study. You'll get classical instruction in the fundamentals of arts such as:
- Life drawing
- Painting
- Sculpture
- Two-dimensional drawing
- Technical drawing
Join the Creative Community
The Art Fundamentals Program emphasizes studio work. You will produce art from the first day of class, gaining practical skills while discovering your strengths and your preferences. As part of Sheridan's broader creative community, you'll have the opportunity to explore many options for further study and careers in the visual arts. By the end of the year you'll have a body of work and the beginnings of an artistic identity.
Transfer Opportunities
Your Art Fundamentals certificate will qualify you for more advanced programs. At Sheridan, you will be considered for admission to the Visual and Creative Arts Program. In addition, students who complete the Art Fundamentals Program with a GPA of 3.5 will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) and the BA program at Brock University. Students must present a portfolio and complete required humanities courses over the summer. Graduates are also eligible for direct entry into Year 2 of the Visual and Creative Arts program at Sir Sanford Fleming's Haliburton School.
The Sheridan Art Fundamentals one-year certificate program provides a rigorous studio-based introduction to the visual arts and opens doors to more advanced study. Many students who complete the Art Fundamentals Program go on to further study in the artistic specialty of their preference. Some students gain entry-level employment in jobs that require basic visual arts skills.
