Sheridan’s Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences (Athletic Therapy)  (BAHSc,  AT) Program was specifically designed to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills and experience to become an athletic therapist certified by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association. The Athletic Therapy program equips you with:

  • Advanced skills in athletic therapy including field assessment and injury treatment, and clinical assessment and rehabilitation for all types of injuries
  • Entrepreneurial business skills to help you establish a practice
  • Research skills to ensure you always stay current in the field
  • 1,200 hours of embedded athletic therapy course experience while in school

The program integrates practical, hands-on field and clinical experience through combined lecture and lab experinces. Sheridan’s facilities include a new,  state-of-the-art Athletic Therapy Clinic  with  aquatic rehab, dedicated lab space with brand new equipment as well as new training facilities.  All educators are Certified Athletic Therapists with advanced degrees in the areas of rehabilitation sciences, biomechanics and physiology as well as extensive experience working in the field.*

Field Placement

Each semester of the last three years of your Athletic Therapy program includes field and/ or clinical work. During Year 2  you'll undertake a field practicum in a high school sports team or community hockey team environment.  Year 3 is spent predominantly with Varsity teams in colleges and universities.  In Year 4 you'll have more clinical responsibility working both in the Sheridan Athletic Therapy Centre as well as community clinics.  Between Years 3 and 4, you'll have an opportunity to participate in a 14-week internship gaining hands-on experience in athletic therapy.

 

N.B.  Sheridan has been granted consent by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer this applied degree for a further five-year term starting May 30, 2008. Sheridan will ensure all students admitted to the Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences (Athletic Therapy) Program during the period of consent will have the opportunity to complete the program within a reasonable timeframe.

Sheridan’s training gives you a fast start in your career. When you complete your Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences you'll be well prepared to work in a variety of athletic therapy settings including:

  • Sports health care team (amateur, varsity or professional)
  • Athletic therapy clinics (established clinics, college/university or private practice)
  • Corporations concerned about corporate wellness
  • Insurance companies
  • Orthopaedic bracing

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including the following required courses:
  • English, Grade 12 (ENG4U)

plus

  • Biology, Grade 12 (U)

plus one of:

  • Physics, Grade 12 (U) or 
  • Science, Grade 12 (M) or
  • Exercise Science, Grade 12 (U) or
  • Chemistry, Grade 12 (U)

plus

  • Three additional Grade 12 credits at the U or M level 
  •  Minimum 65% overall average

or

  • Two semesters of postsecondary education including required courses with a minimum 65% overall average

APPLICANT SELECTION

Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses) and the results of their related work/volunteer experience which includes:

Related Work/Volunteer Experience:

  • Complete 100 hours of volunteer work with an Athletic Therapist or Sports Physiotherapist (SPD)
  • Co-op experience related to Athletic Therapy strongly recommended
  • Attend an information session and submit an essay that will be used to evaluate writing skills
  • Hold valid Standard First Aid and CPR- HCP credentials prior to entrance in the program                                                                                                                                                       Criminal Record Check and Immunization Requirements                                                                                                                                                                                                         Sheridan field placement agencies may require a police record check for criminal offences, a vulnerable sector check and/or a current acceptable record of immunization. Students will be required to provide this documentation directly to their field placement prior to the start of the placement and at their own expense. Students who cannot meet these requirements may have limited field placement opportunities.
