Excellent preparation for a career in advertising strategy and management

When you graduate from the Sheridan Advertising Management Program you'll have completed a one-year, in-depth immersion in the planning, strategic development and execution of professional advertising. You’ll be confident of your abilities and ready to immediately contribute to a professional advertising team.

Through hands-on learning experiences with professors who are well experienced in the advertising industry, you’ll master critical thinking skills so you can analyze and solve complex marketing communication challenges. The scope of your advertising classes prepares you to work in a Canadian advertising agency, media company or within an internal marketing department.

The Advertising Management graduate certificate program focuses on equipping you to:

  • Understand target markets

  • Develop a product's brand identity and determine how to communicate it
  • Know how your advertising fits in the total communications plan
  • Develop a complete media plan
  • Utilize creative thinking skills to create a comprehensive advertising and integrated marketing communications plan

Advertising Industry Experience


You'll have the opportunity to take part in an optional four-week unpaid work experience within the advertising industry. It’s the perfect way to add depth to your résumé while also use utilitizing your new skills.

The Advertising certificate program is located at the Trafalgar Road Campus in Oakville, Ontario.

  • Evaluate a specific market situation, providing strategic insights into consumer behaviour based on solid research and analysis.
  • Integrate research methods and techniques specific to advertising in the presentation of an original media plan.
  • Incorporate a variety of communication techniques that support marketing communication objectives and influence consumer behaviour.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of an advertising initiative.
  • Create simulations (using critical analysis) that can be modified when needed to alter the direction of a communication concept.
  • Manage a project from conception to completion using current industry hardware and software.
  • Differentiate appropriate marketing principles which should be used to specify the advertising needs of clients.
  • Assess advertising standards and practices in accordance with relevant Canadian law and established International practices.
  • Exhibit professional and ethical behaviour that contributes to the maintenance of professional relationships, and fosters effective communication with clients, co-workers and others.
  • Take calculated creative risks in the genertion of work.

Program Eligibility

  • Postsecondary diploma or degree

and/or

  • Demonstrated competence through related work and/or educational experience

Applicant Selection

Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of previous academic achievement, and/or demonstrated experience.

In some cases, applicants may be requested to submit a résumé, which includes details of related work experience, and a cover letter, which summarizes their career goals and reasons for wanting to take this program.

Postsecondary transcripts, indicating courses completed to date, must be submitted to ontariocolleges.ca at the time of application.

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program will be assessed and advised individually and may be considered for other, related programs.

Graduates of Sheridan’s diploma/advanced diploma program in Advertising are not considered eligible for this program due to duplication in course content.
