With a Chemical Laboratory Technician diploma from Sheridan, you can enter some of Canada's most dynamic industries. Environmental services, energy, health care, and other rapidly growing sectors rely on chemical analysis and research - and they all need laboratory technician college graduates with specialized skills for the chemical lab.

Sheridan's Chemical Lab Technician diploma program provides excellent facilities with current technology and many opportunities for hands-on experience. You'll work directly with the same sophisticated instrumentation that's used in research and industry, while taking chemical lab technician college courses in:

  • Instrumental analysis and analytical chemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Organic and inorganic chemistry
  • Chemical and related industries
  • Environmental science


 

Flexible Options for Work and Study

 

The chemical lab technician diploma program begins with a solid academic foundation with courses in organic and inorganic chemistry, calculus and advanced science. Course credits can be transferred (either before or after graduation) directly to the Chemical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology - Environmental or Environmental Technician programs at Sheridan, making the Chemical Laboratory Technician option extremely flexible.

Graduates of these programs have an excellent record of continuing their study at universities to obtain degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering and related disciplines.

The Chemical Laboratory Technician Program is nationally accredited by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board.  Graduates have completed all the academic requirements for professional certification with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).  Additional requirements for certification exist and are established by OACETT.  Graduates are also eligible for membership in the Chemical Institute of Canada.

Chemical Laboratory Technician courses are taught at the Davis Campus in Brampton, Ontario.

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to
  • analyze chemical samples using modern instrumentation and traditional methods
  • synthesize and purify chemical compounds
  • prepare samples and solutions
  • utilize quality assurance and quality control methods
  • apply the principles of chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics

Chemical Laboratory Technician graduates work with chemists and engineers in research and development labs, quality control and technical service labs, government agencies and educational institutions. Their duties may include:
  • Analysing samples
  • Preparing samples and solutions, making and purifying chemicals
  • Technical sales for laboratory equipment and supplies
With experience, graduates may move into management and supervisory positions.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY


Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, including these required courses:

  • One English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U)

plus

  • One Chemistry, Grade 11 (U) or Grade 12 (C)
  • Grade 12 Mathematics for College Technology (MCT4C) or
    Grade 11 Functions (MCF3M) or Grade 11 Functions and Relations (MCR3U) or any Grade 12 (U) mathematics course

or

Mature student status. (See "Admissions" section for details.)

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements will be invited to complete pre-admission tests in mathematics and English. Applicants asked to take the test are considered for admission to Term 1 contingent on receiving a minimum grade of 60% in both the pre-admission mathematics/English tests.

Applicants who are lacking the mathematics admission requirements for this program may be able to be admitted into this program with additional courses completed in their first year at Sheridan. There may be additional cost involved depending on the program.

 

Applicant Selection


Eligible applicants will be selected on the basis of their previous academic achievement (the average of their six highest senior-level credits, including required courses), and/or results of pre-admission testing.

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for this program will be assessed and advised individually and may be considered for other, related programs.

Admission at an Advanced Level (Direct Entry)

 
Students may apply for admission at an Advanced Level (Direct Entry) to Year 2 of this program if they have relevant credits from a university or college. Students may have to complete certain courses from Year 1 prior to graduation.
