First Year Connections

The Student Advisement Centre/First Year Connections Peer Mentors are here to make a positive impact on the Sheridan student experience. These Peer Mentors assist students at the Student Advisement Centre and around campus, and are involved in the First Year Connections Program.

Are you a new student to Sheridan? Would you like to get involved on campus? Do you want to meet other first year students? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you’re invited to join:

First Year Connections

First Year Connections (FYC) pairs you with a Peer Mentor, a current senior student, who will answer any questions you may have, remind you of important dates, host events where you can connect with other students, and invite you to activities that will enhance your Sheridan experience.

If you would like to get involved in the FYC program, please email us your name and student ID number to: fyc@sheridaninstitute.ca or, stop by the Student Advisement Centre in Portable C at the Davis Campus or room B104 at the Trafalgar Campus.

NOW LET'S MEET YOUR PEERS!

Jack

Program: Business Administration - Accounting
Why Sheridan?: I chose Sheridan because of its laid back demeanor. I'm not saying you can slack off and expect to get much out of your education, but there is a vibe here that allows you to be yourself and do your own thing. I feel the school allows me to be who I am, and do what I want to do, while providing the resources to help me pursue my career interests.
Why Peer Mentoring?: The Peer Mentoring program exists for one simple reason: to help students. Being a student myself, it was great to have this service when I needed it, and becoming a Peer Mentor allows me the opportunity to do my part for the school.

Christine

Program: Business Adminstration - Human Resources Management Co-op
Why Sheridan?:  Sheridan has an excellent reputation for its business programs, and the co-op opportunity will help me make a smooth transition into 'The Real World'. After attending Sheridan for a year now, I know that I made the right decision.
Why Peer Mentoring?: Anyone can study at Sheridan and leave with a piece of paper. I want to do more than that. I want to give back to the Sheridan community, and being able to help other students allows me to do this.

Courtney

Program: Business Administration Accounting
Why Sheridan?: Because Sheridan is recognized by employers as an excellent institution of higher learning.
Why Peer Mentoring?: As a mature student I got a lot of help from the Student Advisement Centre about my study options and what direction to take in achieving my goals. Being a Peer Mentor allows me to give back to the College by helping other students.

Meaghan

Program: General Arts and Science - University Transfer
Why Sheridan?: I chose Sheridan College to attain my diploma due to wonderful feedback I heard from previous students. Furthermore, Sheridan has great partnerships with other universities in Canada and USA that I can transfer to upon receiving my diploma. Lastly, Sheridan's faculty has introduced many different opportunities to me as a student and that was a definite eye catcher!
Why Peer Mentoring?: I chose Peer Mentoring because I wanted to give back to other students since I had an awesome first year! I believe I can show students the different advantages Sheridan offers and also enhance their college experience. Lastly, I personally want to develop and enhance my post-secondary experience at Sheridan College!

Rebecca

Program: Visual and Creative Arts
Why Sheridan?: Being from an artistic back ground I was always attracted to Sheridan College, but unfortunately because of personal choices I ended up working for seven years before making the choice to obtain my goals by applying to Sheridan. Sheridan's teachers and staff are supportive of the students as well as passionate about their careers. This atmosphere makes for a positive and encouraging post-secondary experience.
Why Peer Mentoring?: Entering college as a single mother as well as mature student made the journey seem overwhelming. Thankfully, Sheridan offers wonderful programs such as FYC to help new students adjust to college life. After completing my first year successfully and transfering into a second program, I wanted to be involved with helping new students in the same way the Student Advisement Centre helped me.

Andrew

Program: Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences (Exercise Science and Health Promotion)
Why Sheridan?: Sheridan provides career-focused education and training, knowledgeable faculty, practical hands on learning experience, and comprehensive student support services. I also love the small interactive classes which allow for cohort cohesiveness and great student-teacher relations.
Why Peer Mentoring?: I want to help students make a smooth transition into Sheridan and their program. I know how stressful school can be, therefore helping students to utilize the tools to succeed in a competitive and fast paced environment is important. Additionally, giving back to the students means the Sheridan community as a whole is strengthened. Cheers.

Leon

Program: Investigations Public & Private
Why Sheridan?:  Being a graduate of Sheridan showed me that Sheridan has a lot to offer and just being a student has been a great experience.
Why Peer Mentoring?: I decided to become a Peer Mentor to share my great experience I had with the college and to give back something worth while to first year students.

Daniela

Program: Child and Youth Worker
Why Sheridan?: I decided to come to Sheridan so I could be close to home and family, and also because I believe they have the best program available for me to study Child and Youth Work.
Why Peer Mentoring?: I wanted to be a Peer Mentor so I could help out other Sheridan students, and show them how much this school really has to offer. Also, I wanted to do more than come to school just to attend class. I wanted to be involved in my community and be a part of the team that prioritizes in helping students first and foremost.

Ruth

Program: Paralegal
Why Sheridan?: I was very impressed with the program and the faculty.
Why Peer Mentoring?: I returned to school as a mature student and I was very impressed and reassured when as a new student I was phoned by a Peer Mentor. I was given some great information and he was extremely helpful and informative. This really helped me when I came to the school so I became a Peer Mentor in the hopes of being able to do the same for other new students to Sheridan.

Sarah

Program: Business Administration - Accounting
Why Sheridan?: I did not particularly enjoy my first year in post-secondary because I attended a University that I felt lacked a sense of community and the practical education I needed for my future career. Sheridan has been a clear contrast - I will be receiving hands on experience through my Co-op placements, and the environment on campus is friendly as there is always someone ready to help you.
Why Peer Mentoring?: I decided to become a Peer Mentor because I enjoy meeting new people and helping others. I really appreciated the help I received through the Student Advisement Centre during my first year at Sheridan, and I thought Peer Mentoring would be a great way to give back.

Mike

Program: Business Administration - Marketing
Why Sheridan?: Sheridan has a really well respected business program, and I knew I wanted a strong foundation in business, so Sheridan became the natural choice. Combined with the great atmosphere at the school, and its proximity to my house, I knew I had made the right decision!
Why Peer Mentoring?: I struggled to find my way while I was in my first year at Sheridan, and I received tons of support from the campus, and specifically the Student Advisement Centre. When I was told about the Peer Mentor opportunity, I jumped at the chance to give back to not only my school but to new first year students who are now experiencing much of what I felt when I first start at Sheridan.

Dani

Program: Social Service Worker
Why Sheridan?: I came to Sheridan for more than an education. I knew it would provide an opportunity to learn and grow as a person. This is because the services here are exceptional and staff go out of their way to help students feel welcome and be successful within college and beyond.
Why Peer Mentoring?: I wanted to be a Peer Mentor for three reasons; because I wanted to be involved within the Sheridan community, help students, and learn about diversity and resources within the college itself that help with student success.

Harmeet

Program: Advertising
Why Sheridan?: It's a reputable college that offered me with just the right courses I was looking for in a program. The college wide statistics for Advertising also got me interested!
Why Peer Mentoring?: I was looking to get more involved with the Sheridan community. Also, Peer Mentoring provides me with insight into college resources and it's a great opportunity to meet new people.

Ian

Program: Investigations - Public & Private
Why Sheridan?: I am actually a graduate of the Sheridan Police Foundations program and this is my second year being a Peer Mentor in the Student Advisement Centre. I am currently in year one of my new program, Investigations-Public & Private and I am looking forward to another two years at Sheridan College.
Why Peer Mentoring?: I first heard of this Peer Mentoring position through volunteer work I was doing with the school. I applied for the position because I love helping people in new environments so they can make an easy, comfortable, and successful transition to something new. I always want people to feel involved and connected in life so that things can be more enjoyable and not have the feeling of being lost. I also look forward to improving my social and communication skills and most of all make new friends.
