Sheridan has one of the largest and most advanced mobile computing programs in Canada, with over 8,000 students benefiting from the integration of laptop computers into their learning experience. We are also the pioneer in the design of mobile computing classrooms that stimulate collaborative, team-based learning and feature ergonomically designed furniture, large whiteboards, and projection systems.
Bring Your Own Laptop
Students in mobile computing programs are required to own a laptop computer that complies with their program’s hardware and software standards. Specific requirements for individual programs are available from the Mobile Computing website. If you are hoping to use a laptop you already own, you will be able to access software that will help you determine if your existing computer is suitable.
Laptop Readiness Sessions
All mobile students - even the most technology savvy - are strongly encouraged to attend one of the laptop readiness sessions that are held prior to the start of the September and January semesters. Attending one of these sessions will ensure that you get the support you need so your laptop is setup for use on Sheridan's network right out of the gate. Complete details are available on the Mobile Computing website.
Mobile computing students have access to a wide variety of support resources. In addition to being able to access a growing list of online, self-help tools, you have access to student tech tutors and staff professionals in the Instructional Technology Support Centre (ITSC). The ITSC provides in-person and telephone assistance, 7 days a week, for all mobile computing related support issues.
Students connect with Sheridan’s internal network through wired and wireless access ports throughout the College. Once online, students can access collaborative work groups, web-based research, subject-area chat rooms, lecture notes, course schedules and outlines, quizzes and tests, assignments, reminders and grades - giving you a flexible and powerful tool to enhance your learning experience at Sheridan.
Student and Employer Approved
The most significant advantage of mobile computing at Sheridan is that students and employers alike tell us that our mobile computing program introduces a new level of comfort and proficiency with innovative technologies, and the ability to work and collaborate in a networked environment.
